How to Buy the Right Franchise (Not just the Best One)

I get asked this question almost every day: “Scott, what’s the best franchise to buy right now?” If you’re exploring franchise opportunities or thinking about buying a franchise for the first time, it’s a smart question. People want certainty. They want to know if they’re choosing from the best franchises available.

But honest answers are always the same: It depends.

It depends on what you enjoy doing. It depends on what you’re naturally good at. It depends on how much capital you’re comfortable investing, how you evaluate risk, and how involved you want to be day to day. Most importantly, it depends on what kind of life you want this business to support.

I’ve learned over the years that the “best franchise” on paper can quickly become the wrong franchise if it doesn’t align with your lifestyle, values, and long-term vision. A business that generates revenue but consumes your life is rarely a win.

That’s why every successful franchise journey starts with one essential question: What’s my why?

The Biggest Mistake People Make When Buying a Franchise

Most first-time buyers begin their franchise search the same way. They Google franchises for sale, scan top franchise rankings, compare investment minimums, and read articles about what’s “hot” right now.

While that information can be useful, it almost never leads to the right decision.

Franchising isn’t about chasing trends or picking the most recognizable brand. It’s about designing a life and choosing a business that supports it. I’ve seen incredible franchise opportunities fail because the owner never wanted to lead people or manage operations. I’ve also seen so-called “boring” franchises create extraordinary freedom and long-term wealth because the owner was aligned with the business and showed up as a leader.

A franchise can look perfect on paper and still be a poor fit if it doesn’t match your personality, energy level, leadership style, and lifestyle goals.

Defining Your Why Before You Buy a Franchise

Before I ever discuss brands, concepts, or investment ranges with clients, I slow the process down. The goal isn’t to find any franchise for sale. The goal is to find the right franchise opportunity for you. That starts with better questions.

I ask clients to think about what they genuinely enjoy doing and where they naturally thrive. Some people love being out in the field, while others prefer running the business behind the scenes. Some enjoy sales and relationship-building, while others are wired for systems, operations, and problem-solving.

We also talk about involvement. Do you want to be a full-time owner-operator, or are you looking for a manager-run business that allows you to keep your current career? What does your ideal day look like? Early mornings or flexible schedules? Nights and weekends or predictable weekday hours?  Is the franchisor doing lead generation or you?

Environment matters too. Some people want brick-and-mortar locations where customers come to them. Others prefer mobile or service-based models where the business goes to the customer. B2B versus B2C, small teams versus larger organizations, and repeat services versus high-ticket projects all play a role in long-term satisfaction. What type of skills do your employees have: blue-collar, college-aged, skilled trades, licensed (nurse, plumber), or professionals – 1099 vs employees?

Alignment is Everything

Risk tolerance is another critical piece. Some buyers prioritize proven, essential-needs-based franchises that perform well in all economic cycles. Others are drawn to want-based or passion-driven businesses that serve families, seniors, or community needs. None of these paths is wrong—but alignment is everything.

A franchise becomes imperfect if it doesn’t support your lifestyle goals, align with your quality-of-life expectations, or give you a reason to lead your team with purpose and accountability.

Once your why is clearly defined, we finally have the criteria needed to identify the best franchise for you.

There Is No “Best Franchise” — Only the Best Match

Franchise ownership is ultimately about alignment. When the right owner finds the right business, leadership feels natural, growth becomes sustainable, and work supports life instead of consuming it.

That’s what success really looks like.

The right franchise opportunity can create freedom through control over your time, reduce risk by having a proven system, flexibility in how you operate and scale, and wealth that goes beyond income to long-term value. Most importantly, it creates a lifestyle where business fits your life, not the other way around.
